It’s A Shame!

The first time someone used this phrase with me, I wasn’t sure what she meant. In Nigeria, people say “it’s a shame” when they imply that someone has done something shameful or disgraceful. 

But in England, it’s not exactly so. 

So one day I was unable to make an appointment because I wasn’t feeling well enough, and when I called to inform my British colleague of this disappointment, she replied “Oh dear, it’s a shame”, and I’m like “Shame? Shame on who”?

I wasn’t exactly sure how to react, but it absolutely didn’t go down well with me because of my preexisting understanding of the phrase.

On more than one occasion, I was on a chat with someone and I expressed my disappointment about the rain which has disrupted my plans for the day, and the response from this person was “It’s a shame”.

This got me a bit confused. Why am I being “shamed” for all of these? 🤷‍♀️ 

I was too embarrassed to ask anyone what they meant by the phrase. So I had to ask google, and I found the answer. 😊

People from around here - The UK - use this phrase to mean: “It’s a pity”. Or as a way of saying “That’s a sad situation”. Etc,.

Now I’ve gotten acquainted with this, and I no longer feel embarrassed when someone says “it’s a shame”. 😊

I learned that during summer the UK gets sunny and really warm & nice, and I anticipated it, but to my disappointment, it’s been RAIN RAIN RAIN...! What kind of summer is this? IT'S A SHAME!!! 😞 


PS: You’ll be seeing this phrase quite often in my writings, I hope you understand what I mean.

DAY IN THE NIGHT

Night turned day in Calabar as we savored every minute of the carnival till the last bone. I nor gree go house, as I made sure that I saw every band, their presentation and costumes which was lit. As at 1.am I was still walking, following the huge crowds of people from all walks of life trekking on the road like the people of Israel heading the promise land. Gun vs Knife Culture

  Unlike the USA, there aren’t many guns in the UK, and people barely have access to it. A colleague was narrating how she was almost robbed in her neighborhood, and when I asked what weapon the criminal used she said it was a knife. Knife crime is on the rise in many parts of London and across the UK. That’s why it is quite difficult to walk into a shop in the UK to buy a knife. Firstly, not many shops sell knives and the ones that sell will ask for some sort of proof or ID before selling, thereby making them quite difficult to access.  Obviously, in America, there’s a high record of gun violence. Someone can literally walk into a shop and get a gun, from what I heard, it is that easy. And so, between the UK and the US, I really can’t say one is better as per knife or gun violence because both of them are capable of sending people to their graves.   The reason why many Nigerian youths seem to be garnering a massive movement for the Presidential aspirant Peter Obi is not that they are guaranteed that he’ll be the “savior”, but because youths are tired of recycling the same old self-conceited egocentric politicians as leaders.  They want something new, something different, something original! And they don’t care who he is or where he’s from! I know of a man who said he doesn’t want to have any children because the world is already overpopulated and he doesn’t want to add to the world’s population. He is 50+ and single, and this is the reason he lives the way he does.  There’s this woman in his neighborhood who’s got 8 children. He makes reference to her everytime, and says he’s so pissed to see that just one person has so many children; he gets so vexed that according to him, the woman should be arrested! 🤣 Lol... BDSM - An acronym for ' bondage and discipline, dominance and submission, sadism and masochism' . It is a form of sex where one person inflicts pain on the other for pleasure. And I will never understand the concept behind it.  Because why will you tie me with ropes and handcuffs, and flog me with a belt in the name of lovemaking? Proudest thing ever!

  One of the proudest things I’ve done in my life is resigning from a toxic work environment. I once worked with this Start-up organization, where the CEO was a real bossy boss.  He was walking in his “CEO shoes” every day of his life, he was so obsessed with achieving his dream for his org that he cared less about his employees!  We would use our personal emails and our personal mobile number to reach out to clients.  I remember suggesting that a work phone should be provided for me because the clients were beginning to encroach on my personal space, but I was told off and tagged a complainer. In so many ways we were going out of our way to help him achieve his goals for his organization, yet these sacrifices meant nothing to him.  He kept demanding more.  He’d give us tasks that encroached into our weekends even though working weekends wasn’t part of our employment contract, and when we fell short of delivery he’d scold us so harshly, making us feel like ...

The UK has a very contagious reading culture. The habit of reading is something I find very fascinating, being a book lover myself! In the UK, you’ll find people reading books on the bus, train, plane, in the park, on the streets, and even while walking on the road (which is unsafe btw) lol. They not only read books, but they also read and leave for others to read. You could be walking around a neighborhood and find books lying outside someone’s house with the caption “they’re free, help yourself”.   Location: Brighton      I recall one of my first times boarding a commercial bus in London. Usually, if you intend to alight at a certain bus stop, you’re expected to press the bell before the driver approaches the bus stop. So on this occasion, I got to where I was gonna alight, and of course, I wasn’t used to "pressing the bell" before hand, so as the driver approached my street I tried to alert him by   saying “I’m stopping here o”, but he didn’t listen.       Before I said jack, he had zoomed passed my street, then I started screaming “ Oga stop me here o ”...
