Bridgerton S1 - My Review (No Spoilers)

Yes! I know I’m late! Especially when it comes to trending movies, I always am! But I’m glad I eventually saw it! Watched the entire Season 1 in one night! Pheeeew! But definitely worth my time! 😇

The Netflix series is a story about love, marriage, gender biases, matchmaking, women, men, power, and most importantly, writing! It was built on romance (loads of it!), tension, action, suspense and true love!

  1. Firstly, the movie has a fair spread of color and diversity, the movie directors were very meticulous of representation, and this was very well communicated! You’ll spot this in the first episode of S1 (as well as others episodes), where the Bridgerton and Featherington families both presented their girls to the Queen. In this scene you’ll see the queen sitting in all her majesty with two maids behind her—one Black, and the other White; but the White maid was seen fanning the Queen, while the Black maid was seen fanning herself alone. What I got from this scene was that the movie producers tried to eliminate the long-standing stereotype of the “Black slave” who does the hard work. This was well communicated! 👍🏾

2. In this movie, you will also see an aggressive Black dad. I guess it had to be this way because in the story, the protagonist himself is Black. Let’s leave it there!

3. THE QUEEN:

I get that the producers of this film used the role of a woman being the supreme ruler and head to eliminate the conventions and ideology that only a man can be head! They are trying to say women can be powerful rulers too! However, I struggle to understand the Queens role in the story. She was a very unassuming queen, who saw and partook in the lives of her subjects, But her majesty was somehow over simplified through her meddlesomeness, and her showing up at almost every party!

4. ENGLISH
The cutglass English used in this movie made me fall in love with English all over again! It was super impressive! ☺️ In London, what we hear often is Cockney English—wherein the speakers eat their words. 😂
For example, pronouncing “Water” as war’ah, “think” as fink, Tuesday as chewsday, etc, and their sentences are overwhelmed with sentence-fillers like “like”, “you know”, “ummm”, etc, lol… but in this movie the actors spoke clean English, which is known as the cutglass English! Very posh! and they pronounce every word clearly! Pheeew! I love it!
I have also hopefully updated my vocabulary because of this movie. They used words/phrases like:
  • ‘court’ instead of date,
  • ‘Modiste, instead of tailor
  • ‘Debutante’ instead of ‘marriageable lady’
  • ‘Promenade’ instead of stroll
  • ‘Diamond of the first waters’ instead of beautiful woman
  • ‘Rake’ instead of womanizer/playboy
  • ‘Viscount’ instead of ‘nobleman/noblewoman’.
  • ‘Ruse’ instead of deceit/scam
  • ‘Duel’ instead of gunfight, etc.

These are a few words you might need to learn before seeing this movie. 👍🏾

5. RAIN

I feel like the rainfall the during the Duke and Duchess’s ball in last episode was unnecessary. 😂 One quick question: Why is rain in movies mostly associated with romance? 🤔

6. LADY WHISTLEDOWN

The role of Lady Whistledown just highlights the power and significance of writing! And for me as a writer, that was very meaningful! P.S who would have ever imagined that the person behind all the scandal and blowups would be who it turned out to be?! A smooth play of tension there! 🙌🏽

LESSONS TO TAKE AWAY:

1. One very well communicated lesson from the film is a woman’s power and significance in society! Although Daphne’s oldest brother Anthony had the male privilege to be “man of the house” his role could not compare to that of his mother! Even as man of the house, his mother  irrespective of her limitations as a woman in society, was able to play an effective role in her daughter’s life! This tells you that men do not know it all! Women are worth beyond where society places them. And we cannot achieve a great societyby continually berating women.

2. The movie teaches about sex education! Mothers (and father’s) it is your duty to educate your girl child about sex! Don’t shy away from it. Yes, sex is sacred, but it is not sacrilegious! It is unfair to leave your children to unravel shocking realities about sex on their own!

3. Marry your friend!

4. Marry for love, not status, not power, and not for the opinion of others!

5. Be open with your partner from day one!

6. Discuss your boundaries and your priorities!  Come out plain and clean! No lies!

7. Learn to compromise! Be flexible with your decisions and be flexible with life generally!

8. Be open to learning! Don’t get stuckin your ways!

9. Tell your children positive things about them! It builds their self esteem!

10. Wear your confidence like a cloak! E.g The Duke! 🥰

11. Lastly, writing is a weapon! It can make or mar!

My favorite line of the movie is by my fav character: Lady Whistledown:

“Why settle for Duke when you can have a Prince?”

Someone please hold me! I almost fell in love with the Duke myself! Chai! 🥹

The movie had a well deserved ending! And to be honest, I feel like there was no need for a season 2. Anyways, I’ll keep you updated when I see the s2!

This is my review of the brilliant Netflix series season 1! Let me know what you think!
