“Men Are Polygamous In Nature”
There is nothing prestigious about marrying many wives. It has not and will never be the ideal!
It is considered “traditional” to marry more than one wife, but sometimes when we choose to applaud tradition, we should also look at the context in which those traditions were made—some of which have evolved over time, and some that still definitely need to evolve.
Some of these contexts include:
- Back in the days, women were not seen as “co-human beings” but as mere commodities!
- Back then, a man’s wealth is measured not just based on the herd of cattle he has, but also based on the number of women he can marry.
- Men with more wives were seen as more charismatic and “manly” because it then proves that you can afford to “take care” a large family. So the more wives you have the more respected you are.
- Also, marrying a woman back then, is not child’s play, you had to pay a “price” called “brideprice”, hence, the more women you have the more “price” you must have paid, and the more price you paid, the wealthier you appear.
- A woman used to basically be like a “teddy bear” you buy for decorative purposes; you beautify it with ornaments and jewelry. You spend your money on the teddy bear to keep it looking beautiful.
- Her beauty reflects the owners wealth, and the prettier she looks, the more proud the owner feels about himself and his wealth. Hence, women were commodified, and not humanized, back then.
- Women were kept simply for pleasure, admiration and childbearing.
- Women, back then, had no life of their own, they had no free will. Everything she needed ought to be provided by her owner, who is ultimately her “master”!

With all of the above, you should know that for someone to be able to marry more than one wife they must be darn rich!
This tells you why Solomon did not stop even after marrying 700 wives, he needed to further prove his wealth and status by multiplying the number of his sidechicks up to 300.
This commodification of women also tells you why some religious groups in today’s world believe that they will be rewarded with 7 virgins in the other world, after they die. But why not 7 cows? Of course it can’t be cows, because even though women and cows are both commodities of rewards, the former is seen as a more “expensive” commodity than the other.
Having established the degrading fact of women being seen as commodities, it is utterly more disheartening to see that women are still seen in the same light till date! Although life has evolved beyond those practices so much so that women are now CEOs and independent humans, the belief that women are commodities still thrives in certain parts of the world today, even in so called civilized world!
This is why in many parts of the world, including Nigeria my country, men are still applauded and highly regarded for having more than one wife. Their favorite quote is “men are polygamous in nature”. But the word “men” in that sentence actually represents “humankind” which includes men & women. This means that humans can be attracted to more than one person at the same time. So stop using this quote to support your deliberate flirtatious behavior, because women are also polygamous in nature too!
Dear people, There is nothing prestigious about marrying many wives. It has not and will never be the ideal!
Feel free to drop your comments and let me know what you think.
God bless u for dis … even the women have come to accept it that men are polygamous in nature so they can accept that rubbish Notion …. But when a woman leaves her marriage she’s seen as unfit to keep a home..: God help us
ReplyDeleteVery excellent. it's very hard to me to understand how people can treat an animal like a dog, cow or bird like a unsensitve thing you can explode as you want... So, treating a WOMAN in the same way to me is... There's not words; I just don't get it. Treating a being just like you as a property shows almost non-existent level of the understanding of human identity.
