Episode 6... 28th December came the big day, The almighty Calabar carnival itself. A festival of culture, colors and life! In fact Christmas Day in Calabar was not as colorful as the Calabar carnival day itself. Xmas dey trek for where Carnival dey,...It was a blast! Just before it’s 1pm when the major routes will be blocked, Lucy and I left early to get our nails and hair fixed. We meandered our way through to Watts market... Hmmmm, coman see babes, see chicks, slay queens, and hardcore Calabar babes with their hairy yellow skin and 'Yam-Legs'...lol, (abeg na joke o) some don dey there since early mor mor! SUCKING

When I first saw them sucking, so many thoughts ran through my mind; I couldn’t help but wonder what manner of food that could be. Although I was very young, I could still replay the look on their faces whenever they sucked. I’m referring to the Calabar neighbor we had, whose kitchen was marked by the unique redolence. The aroma alone does a public announcement that they are “Calabarians”. I dunno if you’ve tried this sucking before; but my first time was with Afang soup. Afang soup makes no sense without  “suckables” in it. Omg...I lack words to describe. By now you’re wondering what exactly this thing is ... “Mfi”, as it is locally called, is simply unshelled periwinkles. It is mostly eaten by  Cross Riverians and Akwa Ibomites; and it is characterized by so much sand content. You can tell when someone is cooking with “Mfi” during the washing... There’s been so much fuss about the “Busola Dakolo’ Rape Saga, & Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo of COZA church. So many comments, criticisms and “StandingWiths” already.   Therefore, this post is channeled to another direction, one which perhaps you may not have considered.  First of all, lemme take my own 'stand' here… IStandAgainstRape!  Now qiuckly, Busola’s rape case is one of the million of rape cases which have happened in Nigeria, but fortunately it happens to be the one that has stood out. Ask me why?  Now see, of all the many rape cases, Busola’s voice is being heard because she is ‘Somebody’ and again, married to someone who is already a ‘SOMEBODY’ - Timi Dakolo. (Smells like Sh*t) Dawa-Dawa(Locust beans), as it is locally called, was an indispensable seasoning in all the delicacies I prepared. At first I swore to never have anything to do with it because of the horrible smell that came along with it. "It is a fly lover. Chai the smell na blast!" But this same lady, my customer, convinced me, and also schooled me on the health benefits of Dawa-dawa: in her words, “google it na, Kopa. It is very very good”.  I tried it once, and the taste of the soup was unusually sumptuous. And that marked the Genesis of Dawa-dawa in my life! We organized a Christmas party to celebrate their recovery and liberation as well as thank God for his blessings. The party was organised by the hospital team and also supported by the 'Help Wihtout Boundaries' Foundation. The event took place on the 22nd December 2018, at the Federal Neuro Psychiatric hospital in Calabar, graced by the head of clinical operations Dr Ekpe, the consultant psychiatrist in charge of their case Dr Oluntoki, Oberiko Progress other doctors, nurses, social workers, guests and other patients in the hospital. You can imagine the feeling of extreme joy Ben and his family had as they celebrated Christmas.   Recently, a friend and I walked into this high-profile designer perfume shop inside a mall in London to check out some fragrances. As soon as we entered and greeted the Asian sales lady, she left the till where she initially was, and came out onto the shop floor, literally standing behind us and monitoring us. Although my friend and I are Black, my friend, male, is ‘generously-melanined’ this means that he is very dark-skinned, and he is over 6ft tall as well. This sales-lady kept lurking around us, but I didn’t realise this until later. In no time, an Asian guy–a supposed customer–also walked into the shop, and was checking out the perfumes, meanwhile the sales lady’s eyes were locked on my friend and me. A Review of The Harvard Business Review series, AND MORE!

  I eventually saw the end of this book as I promised. Yaaaay! It may not seem like an achievement to others but I count it as such because for the past few years I’ve not been able to bring myself to complete reading a book. As a matter of truth, I still have Chimamanda’s ‘ Half of a Yellow Sun ’ on my bookshelf, waiting to be completed. It was one of the gifts I received on my 21st birthday, and I found it quite captivating at the beginning when I started reading. But once I got to the chapter where it spoke more about the Biafra war and politics, I saw my interest dwindling. Not a fan of politics at all. But now, I think I need to return to that book, maybe not just to continue from the page I left off, but to start all over again. So, on my way to Scotland, I ran into a duty-free shop at the airport and saw some really good books that got me salivating, and I got this Harvard Business Review series on Emotional Intelligence focusing on Confidence. Internship 2021

As one of my 2021 highlights , my master's degree course (Media Practice for Development & Social Change) at The University of Sussex offered me the opportunity to undertake an internship as part of my course. And fortunately, I had my internship at The Winch  working as a Documentary Filmmaker & Youthworker. The experience was not only valuable it was also memorable.  The word Winch has different meanings in different climes. In English, it means " a machine that lifts heavy objects" . In Scottish, it means " Kissing with tongues". And in Nigerian slang, it has the same meaning as "WITCH". And being a Nigerian, I found it quite awkward identifying with the name, I would laugh a few times whenever I told my folks from Nigeria the name of my Placement organization, but as time went on I settled in. Episode 3 Twas 12am already but I said lai lai, This Tiwa savage and Tuface wey dey Com Calabar so, I must see them. Was dead earnest to be part of the show. Night turned day, sleep fly comot my eyes sharp sharp, hit my friend up Lucy Oya let's ball, Calabar uber straight to the venue zuuuuuuum and boom we arrived the event hall @CICC Calabar. Na there we enter gbese! It'll shock you to find out our real situation. So the regular ticket was 3k per individual hence my friend and I were to pay 6k, Oya bring out money pay for ticket na..., as I shook hand for bag say make I bring money, you wee not believe what happened!  My brothers and sisters, na there I discover say our money nor reach to buy tickets. We were so inundated with the enthusiasm to attend the event such that we forgot to ensure we had enough cash for tickets.
